There is far more to Mallorca than the rejuvenating
sun, sea, and sand. Find your way past the army of tan-seeking
tourists, and you will discover Gothic architecture, hilltop
villages, olive groves, and hidden beaches. Make your stay,
at Mallorca worthwhile.
Passport
Nationals of countries, including Australia, Canada, Israel,
Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland and the USA, do not need a
visa for tourist visits of up to 90 days in Spain, although
some of these nationalities (including Australians and Canadians)
may be subject to restrictions in other Schengen countries
and should check with consulates of all Schengen countries
they plan to visit. Nationals of those countries wishing to
work or study in Spain may need a specific visa, so should
contact a Spanish consulate before travel.
Eating
Like that of most islands, Mallorcan cuisine places heavy
emphasis on seafood. The pig also features extensively, but
if you happen to a vegetarian, you can find a range of choices
beyond what is traditionally found in the meat-rich diet of
the mainland.
Shopping
Mallorca is renowned for its crafts, particularly its delicate
needlework. Cultured pearls are another Mallorcan staple;
it is best to buy from a reputable vendor, preferably the
authorized agents for the island, called the Perlas Majorica,
Night Sports
The Balearic Islands are Europe's clubbing mecca. Ibiza attracts
most of the tourist and rave trade, but Palma de Mallorca's
after-dark scene still thrums with excitement. Visit Abaco,
behind a set of ancient timber doors, is the bar of your wildest
dreams. Inside, a Mallorcan patio and candle-lit courtyard
are crammed with elaborate floral arrangements, cascading
towers of fresh fruit, bizarre artwork and soothing classical
music.
Tipping
Tipping in restaurants is a matter of personal choice, as
the law requires that menu prices include service charges.
People leave some small change if they are satisfied and 5%
is usually plenty. It is common to leave small change at bar
and cafe tables. Hotel porters will generally be happy with
€ 1. In pensioner and hotels, it can be worth asking
about discounts for prolonged stays.
Best Souvenir
You can buy Leather shoes and clothing and crafts made from
olive trees to take home or gift your friends and loved ones
as souvenir.
