Until about 6000 BC,
UK was part of the continent of Europe. Stone-age people arrived 3000
ago. In the 1st century BC Celts arrived. They worshipped many gods,
and their priests were called druids. Their beliefs were peculiar.
In the 5th century waves of the Jutes, Angels and Saxons arrived from
German lands after the withdrawal of Roman legions. The Roman Empire
soon split. They drove Celtic people into the mountains of Wales and
Scotland, and fought
with the Danes from the 8th to the 11th centuries. Alfred the Great
wanted to unify Anglo-Saxon kings. He was very well educated (as
well as our Karl IV.), he also started to write Anglo-Saxon chronicle,
the first prosaic piece.
After his death, the Danish King Canute made Britain part of his
Scandinavian Empire.
The 11th century was the last successful invasion by French speaking
Normans led by William, Duke of Normandy, who became William the
Conqueror after defeating Harold in the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
William the Conqueror established a strong central government and
appointed Norman nobleman to high positions. He made London the
capital town and built the Tower of London. During this time the
Norman and Anglo-Saxon language and customs merged. Henry II gained
a piece of French Empire in the South. He made Thomas Becket Archbishop
of Canterbury.
Another implausible period in the history of Great Britain was during
the reign of Queen Victoria. Britain dominated the world industrially,
commercially and militarily. However, the period ended with World
War I, economic crises and World War II in which Britain suffered
considerably.

UK is surrounded by water except for the regions along the Northern
Ireland / Republic of Ireland border. The country is as diverse
as its weather which is due largely to its geography. Scotland is
mostly mountainous in the northern areas and plain in the south
while the Northern England is quite hilly and flat for the rest
of the area and again Wales is almost entirely mountainous except
for the coastline.
Area: 94, 500 square miles
Language: English
Weather
The British weather varies by far but only occasionally are there
extremes of heat and cold. It gets a good average rainfall with
October usually being the wettest month, July – the hottest,
and January – the coldest. The coasts are never troubled by
ice. So it's advisable to bring warm clothing and a waterproof jacket
whatever season you're traveling in as there can be quite a difference
in temperature often between Scotland and Southern England.
Currency
British money is based on the decimal system; each pound sterling
is made up of one hundred pence. Notes are issued to the value of
£50, £20, £10 and £5.
Scottish £1 notes are still in circulation in Scotland.
Though the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man have some different
coins and notes from the mainland, the monetary system is the same.
Coins are issued to the value of £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p,
5p, 2p, and 1p.
Religion
UK practices religious freedom without interference from
the state or the community. Though the majority of the population
in Britain does not indulge in regularly religious services, they
have faiths in god.
Earlier religion was often intertwined with politics; however today’
, Northern Ireland, is the only region where two communities use
religious designations to express unreceptive, political agendas.
Protestants, largely descendants of Scottish and English settlers,
are interested in preserving their union with Britain, while Roman
Catholics, a minority of around 40 percent, fight strongly for union
with Ireland.
Culture and Society
British society constitutes mostly of middle class in numbers
and outlook. Maintaining a high standard of living is a top priority.
British middle-class families often make substantial investments
in order to provide the best education and for their children.
With a climate not too favorable, British houses are made with concrete
blocks or concrete-like building materials as wood can rot due to
dampness.
Clothes reflect the climate, and woolen goods, particularly tweeds,
are famous products.
British cuisines include scrumptiously prepared vegetables and fried
foods. The famous British specialties are roast beef with Yorkshire
pudding (a type of popover baked in meat drippings); shepherd’s
pie, made with minced lamb and mashed potatoes; and scones served
with thick, clotted cream. Other favorite foods include fish and
chips, steak and kidney pie, Cornish pasties, Welsh rarebit, kippers
(salted and smoked herring or salmon), and, in Scotland, haggis
(stuffed sheep’s stomach).
The British people are great socialites. The local public house,
or pub, serves alcoholic beverages and is an important gathering
place, particularly for the working class. Politeness is a trait
of British society, and shouting is regarded as rude.
Sports are important, and people participate in a variety of sports,
including football (soccer), rugby, cricket, tennis, polo, horseracing,
field hockey, and croquet. Fishing is popular, but the few people
who take up hunting come under considerable criticism for doing
so. They are also great lovers of Music, culture, and the arts.
